Nursing Safety Coordinator - (230000RD) The Nusring Safety Coordinator will support and guide the nursing staff to coordinate and collaborate promoting a just culture of patient safety and adherence to national clinical standards to utilize the principles and practices of the science of safety . Serve as a visible and recognized advocate for patient and nursing safety in clinical areas. The coordinator will facilitate process improvements which support the reduction of health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes as well as identification of nurse sensitive measures. Will conduct safety assessments, coordinate the activities of the Safe Nursing Practice Committee, educate others on the system-based cause for error , participate in system safety activities such as the Daily Check-In Call, and communicate literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies and quality improvement to others within the organization. Actively participate in quality and safety related goals and support partner departments. Initiate and keep current strategic plans to formally link safety , performance improvement and research efforts designed to assure a just culture of patient safety . Minimum Education BSN (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 5 years Nursing in a clinical setting required; quality and safety experience (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge Thorough knowledge of patient safety processes and ability to apply quality management/improvement concepts. Proficient in MS Office Suite; experience with data analysis/trending software preferred. Excellent interpersonal relationship skills; excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills.
Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse in District of Columbia (Required)
Functional Accountabilities Patient Safety & Nursing Outcomes
- Coordinate safety program elements such as the Daily Check-In Call, Safety Rounds, Good Catch program and Power of One coaching activities.
- Assist with the coordination of quality, risk and/or patient safety aspects of continuous readiness programs such as from regulatory bodies; regulatory and accreditation preparedness activities; monitoring compliance with regulatory/accreditation standards through various data collection methods; and inputs findings to Directors, Managers, or other accountable individuals.
- Facilitate the Safe Nursing Practice Committee and participate on other nursing committees as appropriate; address strategies to improve outcomes related to safe nursing practice and quality of care.
- Ensure outcomes and practice improvements are shared with nursing at all levels.
- Collaborate with interprofessional teams on problem identification and resolution, cost containment issues, implementation of new services and systems/performance measures.
Communication Link
- Serve as a liaison with Children’s National departments, external customers and visitors.
- Respond to inquiries for additional program information and clarification.
- Coordinate development of meetings, agendas and minutes as necessary.
Quality Data Management
- Develop tools for data collection; coordinate data collection, aggregation, and analysis.
- Coordinate collection of quality and safety indicators.
- Apply benchmark data to patient population when available.
- Track and trend data to evaluate effectiveness of interventions.
- Disseminate data internally through reports and scorecards to facilitate decision-making.
- Disseminate data externally to national databases.
Program Improvement
- Ensure compliance with patient safety activities.
- Provide consultation, team facilitation and leadership to clinical, teams, regarding quality and safety improvement methodologies, assist teams to execute, sustain then spread effective change and redesign.
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships and effective communication to facilitate improvement, fostering collaboration, partnership, innovation, customer service, and effective teamwork.
- Publish outcomes through internal and external publications or presentations. Encourages staff to engage in research when appropriate.
