Audience Editor
USA TODAY/usatoday.com is seeking an audience editor to cover weekday and weekend hours (including Friday - Monday), in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment.
This editor will be part of USA TODAY’s audience team, working on digital, mobile and social platforms.
The candidate must be a self-starter, demonstrate strong news judgment, have prior digital news experience and a background in social media and building audiences.
They will specialize in finding a wide audience for USA TODAY’s stories, photos, videos, graphics, audio and other content, and optimize them for different social/digital platforms.
This editor will also identify and publish pertinent wire articles or content from across the USA TODAY Network. Depending on the candidate's background, they could also write breaking news stories or create original social graphics.
This position is full time remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
We are open to creative scheduling, including a 4-day work week or a 5-day work week.
Job Level: Digital Editor I
Minimum salary for this position: $55,000
A compelling candidate:
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement tactics.
- Is a proactive self-starter with excellent time management skills.
- Has a strong interest in what audiences care about and the tools used to discover trends like CrowdTangle, Google Trends, Twitter and Dataminr.
- Can manage coverage in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations with sound news judgment.
- Has a passion for audience growth, social media and finding new ways to reach readers.
- Is an eagle-eyed copy editor with a background in editing and writing.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working on an audience or social team for a daily news organization.
- Excellent news judgment.
- Experience curating news homepages.
- Top-notch writing and headline-writing skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent copy-editing skills.
- Understanding of search engine optimization.
- Prior reporting, writing experience not required, but preferred.
- Prior experience with digital publishing and packaging.
- Ability to edit and produce digital content packages.
- An understanding of metrics for digital, social environments.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
