The Columbus Dispatch/dispatch.com, located in the fastest-growing city in the Midwest and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digital-first dining reporter to cover Central Ohio’s vast food scene.
Columbus is a diverse city and residents have a diverse palette. We love to eat out and the beauty of the restaurant scene is that you can find all types of cuisine. Our audiences come to us for news on restaurant openings and closings, dining trends and what's new in food in the Central Ohio area.
This beat will publish a mix of breaking news, quick-turn trending stories and enterprise stories in a competitive, 24/7 news cycle. We are looking for someone who can write with a voice and that people will follow.
The ideal candidate is a food lover who is passionate about telling stories about a variety of cuisines and is experienced in SEO, social media, and video storytelling.
Responsibilities:
- Develop exclusive content audiences can't find anywhere else to drive digital subscriptions.
- Closely monitor restaurants and other food and drink establishments in Columbus and Central Ohio.
- Build connections with the dining community.
- Develop sources.
- Relate food and drink trends and issues at the national level to the Columbus area.
- Break news on openings and closings.
- Lead conversations on social media, including Instagram.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three to five years of reporting experience covering restaurants, nightlife, or related topics.
- The ability to write about dining in an engaging way.
- Proficiency shooting photos and videos on mobile devices and knowing what kind of video works on social to help tell your story as well as being able to edit the video is needed.
- Understanding of journalism ethics.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed, including nights and weekends.
- Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen (for driving roles only).
