Position title: Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor- Art, Justice and Digital Media
Salary range: The salary range for this position is $83,100-$135,000 academic year (nine-month basis). The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Percent time: Full-time 100%

Anticipated start: July 1, 2024, with the academic year beginning in September 2024. Degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2024, for employment effective July 1, 2024.

Position Description

The Art Department at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a practitioner specializing in emerging arts and/or design technologies, to join the faculty of the Art Department as an Advanced Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, formally categorized as Lecturer with the Potential for Security Of Employment (LPSOE) or Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE), respectively. The chosen candidate will be a founding member of UCSC’s Creative Technologies program, a new online undergraduate major dedicated to advanced, innovative web-based arts and design pedagogy, and the cultivation of justice and empowered community in digital contexts. The selected candidate will collaborate in the Arts Division to develop multi-departmental, research-driven curricula, and will guide student work in both majors, including socially engaged, activist, and community-based projects. The selected candidate will be expected to serve as the program chair in the future.

The UCSC Creative Technologies program is an interdisciplinary curriculum in technologically focused arts and design practices, emphasizing digital environments as a nurturing nexus for justice, community, and imagination. Drawing its faculty from multiple Arts Division departments, the online program with some in-person components allows UCSC Arts students to transcend genres and the physical space of its campus, as well as bridge geographically and economically remote communities. Creative Technologies is the first online degree program in the University of California system, and is admitting its first cohort of students in Fall of 2024.

The UCSC Art Department is dedicated to educating and training students in cross-disciplinary, multimedia art practices. Art programming comprises courses in drawing, animation, painting, photography, sculpture, print media, intermedia, critical theory, animation, public art, environmental art, social art practice, and interactive technologies. Elena Baskin Visual Arts Studios provides world-class facilities for art production in these areas. The Art Department is committed to pursuing a continuing dialogue about what constitutes essential preparation in the arts while offering students experiences in established practices and emerging technologies. Students graduating with a major in art may become professional artists or pursue careers in such diverse areas as communication design, web design, digital imaging, curating, art education, multimedia specialist, industry consultant, model maker, arts management, museum administration, museum education, art direction, and publishing.

We seek an interdisciplinary arts/design practitioner engaging in creative and/or scholarly work that critically engages media, communication, and culture, in topics possibly including but not limited to justice, power, equity, and inclusion in the arts, media, and design. The selected candidate will have experience with hybrid and/or web-based teaching and learning technologies—preferably with significant teaching experience in online and remote-access environments; the ideal candidate will demonstrate service and leadership experience, and a capacity to mobilize people and resources toward the cultivation of community and excellence in an evolving interdisciplinary institution. We welcome applicants who define their creative work broadly and inclusively, across or transcending traditional disciplinary, genre, or media categories, and who have significant experience in modes of production that center collaborative approaches, and/or that challenge conventional notions of authorship and audience. Special consideration may be offered for candidates who focus on: principles of inclusive design, media arts in Latin America, Caribbean, and Latinx communities; emerging problems of justice—social, algorithmic, climate-related, et cetera—at the intersection of digital technologies and creative and/or scholarly work. The campus operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. In accordance with workload policy, Art L(P)SOE faculty are assigned to serve as primary instructor for six 5-unit courses per year, with an additional two course equivalencies (for eight in total) reserved for service. L(P)SOE faculty are required to undertake administrative service for the department, division, and University, in consultation with their unit chair or director.

The Assistant and Associate Teaching Professor titles confer the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate, and they have the payroll title of “Lecturer with the Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE)” and “Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE)”, respectively. The LSOE title is analogous to tenure.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Media Arts (or equivalent international degrees) or 5 years’ experience as a practitioner specializing in emerging arts and/or design technologies. The applicant must have a record of teaching, including online or hybrid teaching, and a portfolio of creative work. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by June 30, 2024.
