Position summary: This position is responsible for programming automation and controls systems involving PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and DCSs (distributed control systems) and therefore must possess skills in PLC logic and programming with any of the following PLCs: Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, AutomationDirect, and other top providers.  Will create and read logic and flow diagrams for program design, programming, simulation and testing, and start-up. Also, will program/maintain VFDs and instruments including trouble shooting, hardware and software.

Project ownership of applications/projects; schedule and prioritize workload to meet project deadlines.

  • Design and development of automation systems unassisted or within a team.
  • Modify and maintain automation systems.
  • Test, troubleshoot and provide solutions to technical problems and assist others with technical needs.
  • Write automation and computer software programs and routines as necessary.
  • Work with project design, installation, commissioning, project closure and inspections/reporting.
  • Able to read and interpret technical documentation (P&IDs, schematics, loop sheets, manuals, etc.).
  • Write and implement FRS (Functional Requirement Specification).
  • Capable of working with, implementing or completing the following projects:
    • System Design / Procurement
    • Programming / Configuration
    • Close-out Documentation
    • Siemens PCS7, TIA Portal, and other Siemens software but not limited to other operating systems
    • Technical expertise with various SCADA and other applicable systems
    • Ignition software
    • OSIsoft (PI historian system)
    • Contribute to overall compliance and quality of projects
    • Manage time and expenses within allotted project budget
    • Contributes to project scope and budget development
    • Networking and communications system
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of Automation or Controls related experience (Electrical, Computer, Engineering or other technical degree), or a minimum of 5 years of Automation or Controls related experience (includes relevant intern, co-op, or basic work experience).
  • Proficient with multiple automation system platforms including DCS, PLC, HMI, or other applicable systems.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational and follow up skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Basic math skills (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in all units of measure, as well as calculating ratios and percentages).
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, management, and department head staff and various agency personnel.
  • Experience with logic auto-generation from templates is a plus.

The employee is regularly required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to risk of routine industrial hazards which may include the risk of electrical shock. There is the potential that the employee will be exposed to low-level radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
