Position summary:

Responsible for overseeing and assisting with laboratory setups and sample analysis, maintenance of equipment and instrumentation and performing other job-related duties as assigned. Works closely with other departments and their needs.

Essential functions:

  • Execution of manual and automated inorganic analytical procedures and development of associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Organizing and preparing standard/calibration solutions and reagents, analyzing and reporting sample results within a limited timeframe, maintaining a clean, organized and safe laboratory area, maintaining analytical equipment and instrumentation in operational order, and ordering laboratory supplies to support a continuous operation.
  • Data administration, organization and reporting.
  • Design and carry out experiments as requested.
  • Utilize and operate ICP and autotitrator instrumentation.
  • Use of computer systems to include data collection and management.
  • Adhering to GLP principles with respect to analytical and safety programs.
  • Analytical method development and implementation.
  • Establish and maintain a defensible Quality Assurance/Control Program.
  • Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer as appropriate.
  • As relevant, conduct training and provide supervision of lab technician.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field of study along with hands-on experience with manual and automated inorganic methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of ICP capabilities and new method implementation along with the ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot an ICP-OES or other ICP type to be determined.
  • Database experience.
  • Ability to perform inorganic chemistry analyses, including pH, conductivity, chloride, alkalinity, sulfate, uranium and other trace metals using manual and automated methods. Familiarity with instrumentation and laboratory equipment such as burettes, micro pipetters, balances, autotitrator, ICP, and computers are required.
  • A strong background in computer and software operation, mathematics, ability to follow analytical and instrumentation maintenance instructions and diagnose malfunctions, critical thinking capacity, multitasking skills, and efficient in performing analytical methods while maintaining a cost-effective department.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving techniques to provide efficient work flow for reporting timely results for operational control, be dependable, self-motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to direct, coordinate, and advise personnel in test procedures for analyzing components and physical properties of materials.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
